Flapper is now officially 9 years young.

With this, it marks the end of his three months campaign for Sony Action Cam.  It has been a memorable and meaningful journey.  I am so glad that we have been given this opportunity to create and experience new adventures and most of all, end it off with style - Flapper's Birthday Celebration.

The last time Flapper had a big birthday celebration was way back when he was 4.  That was a grand party with 30 of his furry pals.  They came pretty/handsome and went home... absolutely muddy.  Such fun memories!

Since then, unforeseen circumstances led to futile birthday plans every year.  Like the Chinese saying goes, 不同狗,不同命。

Different dog, different life.
Luck is a given for Frodo.
Luck is hard-earned for Flapper.

So this year, I was determined to make something happen.
It HAS to happen.
It WILL happen.

Flapper really deserves a good birthday celebration this year... more than what anyone would ever know or realise.

So when we were first approached to run this campaign, the first thing I knew and said was, "The timing is perfect.  We will end it off with Flapper's birthday bash."

Then as I sat down to think about what adventures to bring him on, it dawned upon me... MAYBE I should do a 'bucket list' for Flapper leading to his 9th birthday.  Then from 'bucket list' (just because it sounds morbid), it became wishlist.

Then from wishlist, it evolved to  'Nine promises to Flapper'.

Nine things I have always wanted to do with Flapper but never had the chance or resources to do it.

Why nine things?

Because Flapper was turning nine.

Why a 'bucket list'?

I think it is fun and exciting to create new adventures and seize every moment I have with Flapper. I do not want to live regretting not fulfilling my "to-do" list with Flapper.  It is very easy to take for granted that there's always a tomorrow.  I work with animals so closely that I know how fragile their lives can be.

Recently, quite a few of Flapper's mates have crossed that rainbow bridge so that motivated me further to create and fulfil this 'Nine Promises' list.

In a way, I guess I hope his adventures can help inspire and encourage other pet owners to really treasure their time with their furry ones.

In addition, after a few disappointing years of not being able to throw a birthday party for Flapper, it was all that more significant to complete this 'Nine Promises' list.  Perhaps it was too ease the guilt too.

Nevertheless, I was excited and terrified at the same time to embark on this 'Nine Promises' journey.  I loved the idea of running different adventures with Flapper but I also knew to execute this ambition, I was putting myself out there for rejections.  Many rejections.  Just because Flapper is a dog.  A big blonde dog.

Most organisations or people don't really care that Flapper is some 'celebrity dog' or is a 'well-trained dog'.

A dog is a dog is a dog.
The word 'dog' is like a taboo.

Dog?
No.

Big dog?
Don't even think about it.

Oh what the heck!  I decided to put on my thick-skinned suit and just do it.  I was really not sure how far I would get to fulfilling those nine promises.  I'll just embrace whatever that comes along the way.  No what ifs.  No regrets.

Were there moments when I felt like giving up?
Absolutely!  The rejections, feeling uninspired, tired, all that editing....

But I kept my focus on Flapper.  These were/are my promises to him.   He deserves every bit of it.  The happiness on his face when we are out and about, and all the precious moments and expressions captured on video.  Those were my constant reminder that it was all well worth it.

HAPPY 9TH BIRTHDAY FLAPPER!

#9  Go on a Trishaw Ride

Imagine Flapper in one of these
and wearing a pair of 'doggles'!
(image from www.scooter99.com)
This is something I have always wanted to do with Flapper.  I have always fancied the idea of him going on one of those scooters with sidecar and Flapper wearing a pair of doggles.  That would be absolutely hilarious!

But okay, truth be told, this would still be more a Frodo thing than Frodo thing.

The other thing I have always wanted to do was go on a trishaw ride with Flapper.  The many times we have watched a trishaw go pass and I would be secretly wishing, "If only I could do this with you...."

Go on a Trishaw Ride.
CHECK!

#8 Be a 'Godfather'
Flapper with his 'Godson'.

This was one of my favourite moments - when Flapper got to meet his 'Godson' for the first time.  We, his Godson's parents and I, had a discussion whether Flapper should be a 'Godbrother' or 'Godfather' but with his wise age of 9, we concurred that Godfather was more suitable.

Flapper has always been great and gentle with kids so I thought it would be fun for him to be a 'Godfather' to one since, well, I don't think he will be a big brother to one anytime soon.

This little one is a celebrity in his own rights.  He has such a busy social calendar, it is not easy trying to meet up with him!  *laugh*

Be a 'Godfather'.

#7  Go on a 'Boat Ride' - Real & 'Fake'

Flapper & Frodo on the 'Fake' Boat
The Intex 'Explorer 300'.
'Fake Boat'
Don't ask me why but I have always been fascinated by one of these inflatable boats and for years, I have wanted to do it with Flapper.  I did not think he would fancy one of these boats very much as the 'wobbliness' when it is floating may not tickle his fancy very much.

However, since we are given a small budget to run new adventures and the Intex 'Explorer' series appeared sturdy plus it's affordable, I had to DO IT.

Surprisingly, Flapper LOVES the boat.

Yes, he's punctured a hole (or 2) on the boat but he did have oodles of fun riding on it.

Happy mummy, I am!

Our first test on the Explorer 300 before the actual use
on his birthday getaway.

Real Boat
What could be better than going on a real boat?

We finally got a chance to do it on his birthday getaway when we took the ferry to St John's Island.

Go on a Boat Ride.
DOUBLE CHECK!

#6 Learn to go Underwater

Flapper's first attempt at going
underwater.
You know, those underwater shots of dogs went viral.  So how could I resist not trying this out with Flapper especially since swimming is his favourite hobby!

And now that we have the Action Cam... why not?

Trying this out with Flapper was really fun.  Reviewing the footages allowed me to see how he would try to get a view of the toy's position before plunging his head in... and there after using his paw to try to feel for it.

Smarty pants, he is.

This is something we will definitely continue post-campaign.

Learn to go underwater.

#5  Have one last run with SCDF Search and Rescue

Flapper used to be a volunteer with SCDF Search and Rescue.  He loved his weekly trainings and did a pretty good job too.  So it was sad when SCDF decided to cease the volunteer training.

Thus, I decided it would be really fun and meaningful for Flapper to have just one more run/training with the unit - just for fun.  We emailed his old friend from the unit to ask for this favour and received a positive response.  Yay!

Unfortunately, we have not completed this yet and we are not allowed to video Flapper doing Search and Rescue (understandably).  With the looming haze, I have no idea when we are going to do this activity... but but better late than never.

We are just happy we got the 'yes'.

#4  Do a School or Home Visit

The little children at 'My First Skool'
loving Flapper... A LOT!
Flapper used to be a therapy dog and he loves to serve humans - for real.  From a young age, Flapper displayed natural 'serve human' instinct i.e. he loves helping me carry my bag, he MUST carry something for the human when one returns home etc.

This was a very important promise to Flapper for his birthday.  He WILL visit a school or home to serve.  He loves this work a lot.

It is not just the big 'adrenaline junkie' adventures but these meaningful projects are very important too.

With many thanks to Principal Gillian from My First Skool AMK 6 for inviting us to interact with those adorable kids.

We love the children as much as they loved Flapper.

Perfect timing.
Perfect activity.

Do a school visit.
CHECK!

#3  Have a food named after Flapper

Sous Chef Flapper
This is a frivilous wish so don't even ask me how it made it to #3.  Believe it or not, it was one of the first few ideas that popped to my head and I had to fulfil this promise!

I guess I just love the idea of having a food made out of his favourite ingredients named after Flapper.

And the thought of Flapper as Sous Chef, that cracked me up even more.

"Have you heard of 'Liver Chips FLAPS-jack'?"
I like the sound of that.

Very cool.

Of course, Mister Flapper ain't complaining about that.  He got to wolf down the food AND milk!

Many thanks to The Barkery Singapore for creating 'Liver Chips FLAPS-jack' and naming it after Flapper.

Have a food named after Flapper.
CHECK!

#2  Go on a Road Trip

Flapper the Driver.
Days before the dogs, I used to travel quite a bit.  The many days I have spent dreaming of taking the boys on cross-country drives on one of those some open-backed vehicle or 4x4.

Reality check.  We are not living in a 'cross-country' type of country here.
We have Pasir Ris to Jurong and that's about it.

No rule books ever said I couldn't stretch my imagination a little.  So I decided to create this little 'road trip' adventure and pretend... just for one day... we are actually on a cross-country drive.

This road trip almost did not happen (read the post here) but with many many thanks to Chrysler Jeep of Singapore, this dream adventure became a reality.

Totally memorable experience.
Much love.

Go on a road trip.

#1  Go on a Vacation / Staycation / Beach Getaway

The dream beach getaway finally happened.

Now this one.... has been on my dream wishlist for like.... forever.

Not just a getaway, I dream of living at a beach house.  I wake up every morning to an empty house because Flapper has opened the gates to let Frodo out to swim with him.  I ring that big chunky bell that hangs at the patio and the boys come running home, grinning from their fabulous morning swim and ready for breakfast.

Ok, keep dreaming.

Back to reality....

This was the first thing I worked on once we got onboard the Sony campaign.  Flapper's birthday was meant to be the 'big end' to the campaign.

I knew that a beach getaway would be most ideal for water baby, Flapper.  He loves the sea and swimming too much.

So Flapper (yes, Flapper) emailed Island Cruise to see if the dogs could go on the ferry then to Sentosa to ask if the dogs could stay at the one and only bungalow.

It was nerve wrecking waiting for the replies.  I was half-expecting for this idea to fly out of the window but for the first time in a long long time, we received affirmative from both parties.   I nearly broke out in tears as that was totally unexpected.

Then came the tricky part.  I had to find my way to Vivocity on 1st July to book that one and only bungalow.  I HATE Vivocity.  I always get lost in that mall.  But for the love of Flapper... it shall be done!

I arrived at the Sentosa - whatever you call that - early.  I felt so proud of me coz I thought I was smart for being early.   I may have gotten the timing wrong but the office already open and I was sixth in line.  Dang!  That was when I started breaking out in cold sweat and thought, "What if I can't get the bungalow?"

Luck was on my side.

There was only one slot left for the bungalow booking and it was the exact dates I wanted - 22nd to 24th September.

I knew then it was meant to be.
Flapper will get his birthday getaway and celebration this year.

THEN!

*drumroll*

Shortly after I had booked the bungalow, his daddy (my husband) broke the news that he had a business trip and could not join us.  I was totally bummed.

"Never mind", I thought.

'Uncle Nic' and his wife were joining us so at least I still had two extra pair of hands to help .

THEN!

*drumroll again*

A few days before the getaway, 'Uncle Nic' messaged to say that he took on a last minute job and could not make it either.

Double dang!

I had to decide to cancel the trip just because logistically, it was humanly-impossible for me one person to handle the dogs and transporting food supply.  You see, St John's Island has NO shops or eateries.  So apart from our personal belongings, I had to make sure I had sufficient food supply especially for Flapper's human guests.

Fortunately, the job got cancelled and 'Uncle Nic' was available again.

THEN!

*drumroll for the last time*

I fell sick.

I was bedridden for two days and I was like "How in the world am I going to pull this off?"

I wavered.  I could not decide if I should just cancel the trip.  The haze was getting worse too which made me feel sicker than I should be.

Surely not!
Was Flapper going to miss having another birthday celebration again?

Fortunately, I miraculously recovered on that Tuesday morning itself and made a mad dash to the supermarket to shop.  I woke up that morning feeling determined that nothing was going to stop me from realising this promise.   I made whatever last minute arrangements I had to and while packing the massive loads of stuff, I wondered WHY I decided to do this.

"I'm mad!  Going St John's with 2 huge blonde dogs?  What was I thinking?"

I was cursing at myself.

"Taking adventures to new heights?  Surely this is new heights!", I thought to myself as I stared at the trolley.

I was exhausted even before we began!  I gritted my teeth, single-handedly loaded all the stuff into my toot van and before I knew it, we were on our way to St John's Island!

At Marina South Pier, finally on our way to St John's Island!
The minute we made it into this rustic bungalow,
I knew that all that effort was well worth it.
With all that said, here we go....

Flapper's Final Action Cam Campaign Video
and
Promise No. 1 - HAVE A BEACH GETAWAY

P.S. And of course, the #1 of all #1 on the list is for Flapper to stay healthy... always.

With this, we officially come to the end of Flapper's campaign for Sony Action Cam - "Prove Yourself: Take Your Adventures to New Heights".

It has been such an adventure and needless to say, challenging to execute all the different adventures.   And I know I've said it many many times but it has indeed been an honour for Flapper to have been given this opportunity to run all these adventures.

And most of all, we were finally able to document all his adventures - not just in the human's POV but we got to document Flapper's and Frodo's POV as well which was uber fun!

This is one experience that will be remembered for a long long time to come.  Even if I do try to forget, there are too many videos sitting in my hard drive that will not make it easy to forget.  :P

I can only thank God for the blessings of having this incredible opportunity to own one of these POV cameras - to be more specific, the Sony Action Cam.

A dog's owner dream.

I'm saying that not because Flapper is an influencer (yes, we are suppose to help promote the product) but for real it is like prayer answered that we now have the Action Cam.  I have longed for one of these POV cameras for years.

Maybe my 'Nine Promises' list should become some Twenty Promises...  ha!

Of course, I've had so many days of "if only I had this when I first adopted Flapper" but then again, there's a time for everything and I am so glad the time is now.

I am so grateful Flapper and I experienced this journey together... now.

And I am even more grateful that senior Flapper is still healthy and fit to run these adventures... now.

Special Edit - Countdown
Nine Promises to Flapper

With this, I will end off this post with thanks.

Heartfelt thanks to:

As I am writing this article of my magnificent and once in a lifetime road trip on the Jeep Wrangler Sahara while hiding from the ridonculous haze, it is happy 9th birthday to me!

Yes, my friends.  I, Flapper Choo, am officially 9 years old.  I feel proud that despite my wise age, I am fit, healthy and able to carry out these wonderful adventures.

Oh yes!  Have you seen the freshly released Action Cam microsite?

Released just in time for birthday!  Woohoo!

How the Jeep Experience Road Trip Happened

I have always dreamt of those cross-country drives, visiting different cities and different towns.  Reality check.  Singapore is Singapore.  A city.  A town.  A country.  All in one.  But there is no rule book that says I cannot imagine myself doing a cross-country road trip.  A round Singapore road trip also can. Lah.

The first thought that came to my mind was, "ooohhh... I would like to go on one of those Jeep."  Sorry guys, those Porsche and Lamborghini are more my yuppie brother, Frodo.  I love sturdy and stable.  I love the 4x4.  I love the Jeep.

But mummy looked at me and said, "I have no idea how I am going to get you a Jeep, Flapper.  I doubt they will ever loan us one."

So we discussed and mummy suggested those single cab pick-ups.  If the companies are not willing to sponsor, at least it will not eat too into my birthday budget.

I started emailing some truck rental companies.  There is this really weird culture here with our local companies.  From the beginning of the campaign, other than those who are willing to help, It seems that all the others can't even send out a courtesy rejection letter.

I got duly ignored and no replies.

i-sigh.

Like before, mummy followed up by calling so eh yeah, no go.  Never thought it would be this tough to rent a pick-up.

Not content to let this adventure slip by, I decided to drop a message on Jeep Owners' Club Singapore to see if there might be any Jeep owner who might be willing to help.

Lo and behold!

The kind administrator had contacted Chrysler Jeep of Singapore on my behalf and I could not believe my eyes when I read, "they are interested in helping cute Flppaer, Frodo and you (mummy) out in your wishlist."

Say it with me.
OH.MY.GOD.

I could not believe it!
Could this really be true?

Mummy quickly made contact with Chrysler Jeep of Singapore.  After a quick discussion and official email to them, we got the big YES about one and a half week later.  I wagged my tail with joy and quickly contacted Uncle Choo for help to be our designated driver.

Uncle Choo very kindly took one day leave to help Frodo and me out with this big adventure.

Double Yay!

Uncle Nic had prior engagement but at the last minute, he said he could squeeze some time out to join us for most part of the adventure.

Triple Yay!

So you see, for every one adventure I go on, there is always a story, a challenge... and a whole lot of rejection before something good happens.

It is a constant reminder to look at the bright side, take the many rejections in stride and surely that rainbow will shine someday, somehow.

That rainbow did shine with gazillion thanks to Chrysler Jeep of Singapore.  That one 'yes' compensated for all the 'no'.  That was all I needed.

And of course, not forgetting my faithful Uncle Nic who has stood by me since the campaign started.

Planning for the road trip

From the day Chrysler Jeep of Singapore gave the affirmative to the day of this grand road, I had just about five days to plan the route.  Mummy and I had very serious discussions about bringing my rascal brother, Frodo, along.

Frodo is....

Scribbles of Road Trip Itinerary
So mummy and I studied the map and drew up a rough plan of places I have not been before.  Places where Frodo and I could actually run.

Trust me.  Not easy.

I think we came up with a pretty good plan.  Other than Mount Faber, we were exploring new grounds.

We had to plan for where the humans could feed themselves too.

Time to email for approvals of our (Frodo and me) blonde presence. Again.

Then we prayed for good weather.
No haze please.

Then we just said, "Que sera sera".

THE Road Trip (My Longwinded Version)

This video says it all.

A very memorable adventure.  We (Frodo and I) got to explore so many different places in a day.  It was just a shame that the haze got progressively worse through the day so we did not manage to capture the pretty skyline with the Action Cam.

But still, we were very blessed to begin the adventure with pleasant weather for most part of the day before the haze kicked in.

Adventure Rating:

Using the Action Cam for the Road Trip

For this adventure, we decided to do things a little differently and at this late point of the campaign, surely we can stretch the capability of the Action Cam a lot more.

First, mummy and I decided that the Action Cam should go on Frodo this time just to give viewers POV from a different dog.  I did put back on the Action Cam now and again.  After many moons and months of figuring out how to get decent dog's POV with the Action Cam, our (Frodo and me) POV came out decent.  Phew!

Read mummy's tips and tricks on using the dog harness.

My rascal brother, Frodo, wearing the Action Cam.
But of course, with Uncle Nic around, he would have other creative ideas....

In the photo, creative Uncle Nic decided we had to do a front shot of the Jeep Wrangler Sahara and there is nothing cable ties cannot mount.  Ha!  The result of this DIY mount worked out really well!  If you strain your eyes hard enough, you can see Frodo captured in the shot!  *guffaw*

As Uncle Nic had his earlier engagement, so he did not lug his usual heavy bag of equipments.  So mummy and Uncle Nic decided to use another make-shift mount.

God knows where this aluminium broomstick came from,
mummy found it in her toot van and found its lightweight useful.

So yeeeppp!  Instead of using some monopod or whatever pod, we used the clip mount on this god-knows-where-it-came-from aluminium broom stick and tadah!  That's how Uncle Nic took videos of us.  Yay!

Fortunately for the Jeep's sensible utility design, we were able to charge the battery between locations to last through this full day adventure.

Frodo and Action Cam recharging between locations.
The travel charger is a must-have for all adventure seekers using the Action Cam.

This road trip is what we (Mummy and I) call the 'epic Action Cam adventure' thus far.  We captured Frodo and I in action, Frodo and my POV (at different times, at the same time), handheld and still mount road/scenery images while driving, "time-lapse" motion, Frodo's head sticking out of the window.... we tried everything (almost) 'Action Cam' as much as we could.

Unlike the start of the campaign where we ended up many NG (no good) footages, we captured many good footages for this adventure  - except one section where mummy had unknowingly smeared half the camera lens with her finger print.  Editing was very difficult especially when many of Frodo's POV came out sharp and stable.

Mummy to me, "Flapper, when the camera is on you, I see a lot of me.  Frodo... very bo-eng (busy).  Here, there and everywhere... everything else but us (Mummy and me)."

Action Cam rating for this adventure:

The Jeep Wrangler Sahara Experience

"Road trip with me... anyone?" - Flapper the Jeep driver

Me (Flapper Choo):
"I love love LOVE the Jeep.  You see, I am no car ride boy.  That's Frodo thus he got the front seat and did that ears flapping with the wind thing.  Those footages of me enthusiastically jumping into the Jeep?  That's for real.  I was actually happy to get into the Jeep!

The Jeep has good road holding and it was comfortable for us doggies.  After we returned the Wrangler, I was reluctant to get back into mummy's toot van.

Mummy to me, "Flapper, you have expensive taste (not as expensive as Frodo but still expensive).  You love this $250,000 vehicle, huh?"

"Uhuh!"

My rating for the Jeep Wrangler Sahara
4-paws because I had to return the Jeep.  i-sigh.

Flapper's Uncle (the real Jeep driver):

Overall, a very nice drive.  Turbo diesel model.

Pros:
  • Comfortable drive, takes the bumps well, easy to drive, surprisingly easy to gauge despite presence on the road.
  • Easy switch from 2WD to AWD (High & Low) for off roading, though very minimal.  Handles off road decently with very respectable passenger comfort.
  • Good Alpine sound system for entertainment.
  • Very adequate air-conditioning to handle Singapore's climate.
  • Surprisingly good mileage.  Overall distance travelled about 150km for the day but only used less than a quarter tank of diesel.
  • Good torque to handle the climb at Mount Faber.

Cons
  • Very big turning radius which makes U-turning an event.  Takes 2.5 to 3 lanes.
  • Surprisingly cramp driver space or.... I may be fat.
  • Brake and accelerator obstable when trying to switch.  I was wearing sneakers but that ought not to be an issue.  This is a potential safety hazard when one is reacting to emergency situations and might panic.

Uncle Choo's rating for the Jeep Wrangler Sahara

Naggy mummy constantly buzzes in my flappy ears that I must always gives thanks.

So here goes!

Many many thanks to:

  • Sony Singapore for the Action Cam 4K and choosing me as an influencer for this campaign.  This drives the "adrenaline junkie" in me.

And now... time to start work on my final (or is it?) video.

MY 9TH BIRTHDAY GETAWAY!

I am Flapper the Sous Chef.
I am making Flapper's Liver Chips FLAPS-jack!
I am very happy (and proud) to announce that I, Flapper Choo, finally have a food named after me - "Liver Chips FLAPS-jack".

Did you know....

As part of this Sony's "Prove Yourself"campaign, mummy has made 9 promises to me for my 9th birthday?

Mummy calls it, "9 promises to Flapper".

I am not revealing what all the 9 promises are.
You will have to wait till the end of the campaign to find out!

This food promise...

CHECK!

And so...

I approached my wonderful (and spoiling) sponsor, The Barkery Singapore / Balto Pets if they could help fulfil this promise.

Did you know II:
Frodo is the current face of The Barkery Singapore.

Did you know III:
Frodo and I are the faces for Lactogold Probiotics?

Read our review of Lactogold Probiotics here.

Then I....
Asked for permission if I could invade their kitchen for a day to be a Sous Chef.

Then I...
Posed this challenge:

To create a new food/cake using my favourite ingredients - LIVER and MILK - and asked if they could name it after me.

I mean how hard can using liver and cow's milk be... right?

I had my sparkly eyes set on a pup-cake.  But they brought up a valid concern.  What if other dogs are lactose intolerant (of course we had to consider that Flapper's food will become a sellable item!) and using goat's milk will be very costly for consumers.

Okay.  Valid point... but well, Lactose intolerant?  What's that?  We, the Choo dogs, have been well-trained to have a strong stomach with good resistance.  We will happily slurp up all the cow's milk in the world.  No problem!

After much consideration, I received THE message from The Barkery Singapore:

"Auntie Margaret (Head Chef) has been quietly working on a recipe and she has come up... "Liver Chips FLAPS-jack".

Genius!
Pure genius!

Liver Chips FLAPS-jack is perfect.
Just perfect.

First, pancake is not on Barkery's menu (something new!).
Second, loads of liver and affordable amount of goat's milk usage. (Brilliant!)
Third, FLAPS-jack.... could not get any more perfect than that!

And knowing Barkery's ethics, it will all be made of nothing but fresh and human-grade ingredients - always fit for humans to eat.

I knew that whatever this FLAPS-jack is... it will be super yummilicious and made of quality ingredients.

Excited, I was!

I am going to have my very own Liver Chips FLAPS-jack and I will be a Sous Chef!  Woohoo!

Activity Rating:
I would give it 6 out of 5 paws!

Using the Sony Action Cam for this cook-out adventure
By Flapper's Mummy

Flapper, being an influencer for Sony's Action Cam, I wanted to showcase a variety of activities that could boast the image quality and capability of the camera.  I also wanted each of Flapper's video to tell a story rather than random senseless shots just to show off the camera's capability.

Now you know why there are 'short' and 'full' videos for each adventure.

For this activity, I once again utilised two Action Cams - one mounted on a tripod (which I occasionally went hand-held as well) and the other on Flapper with his make-shift collar mount.

At this point of filming, I knew the battery life of the Action Cam was not going to be an issue.  By now, I am confident it will last me for a good two hours.  But being forgetful me, I did forget to charge up both cameras!

Fortunately, one good investment I made was to purchase the travel battery kit for my "just in case" moments especially since I cannot 'plug Flapper' to a power point while filming.  So this extra battery came in very useful.

After all, we are featuring Flapper's favourit-est ingredients and it would be fun to see his POV!  I was hoping to capture some drools but that did not happen.  Flapper must have known he was on camera and repaired his faulty faucet.

Auntie Margaret was nervous prior to the filming and was camera-shy.  So I said it was fine to crop her face out.  We could make the video like those animations where the human's face is never shown.

I liked that idea.

Then as we progressed, she relaxed and started having conversations with Flapper.  I stooped down to avoid getting caught by Flapper's camera but I could watch what was happening with the Live View Remote.  I was godsmacked by what Flapper's POV was capturing and I whispered to Ann Marie and Auntie Elizabeth, "we have to convince Auntie Margaret to show her face.  These footages are too good not to show.

What am I going to do without my Live View Remote once the campaign ends?  *i-weep*

I could not wait to see the footages when I got home.  This was the first time Uncle Nic could not join us so it was me, me, me and Flapper to film.

I was nervous whether the footages taken would be good enough.  But as I was going through the footages, I was caught by surprise.  Pleasant surprise.
  • The quality, framing and clarity of the videos turned out really good.  *pat on my shoulder and heave a sigh of relief*
  • Flapper's natural but greedy responses throughout the cook-out.
  • The heartwarming Auntie Margaret and Flapper moments - from the former's early nervousness to her relaxed personal conversations to Flapper as the filming progressed.
  • Some of Flapper's subtle and not-so-subtle response to Auntie Margaret's conversation - I missed that whilst filming.
At that point I knew, I was in "trouble".  It was going to be tough editing down this video.

Believe it or not, this little cook-out adventure actually took the longest time to edit of all the videos thus far.   It was a struggle letting go of some footages.  As much as editing can be [very] tedious, it never ceases to amaze me what gets caught on camera - many moments that I would have otherwise missed because my focus is on Flapper.

I have to confess that I have always wanted to do one of these Sous Chef videos with Flapper but did not have a compelling reason to... till now.

No regrets.

This turned out to be a super fun activity and of course Mr Flapper did not complain.  He got to wolf down the Liver Chips FLAPS-jack - layer by layer.

I am so grateful that Barkery spontaneously agreed to participate, created this new recipe and opened up their kitchen for us to film.

And as always, I continue to count my blessings at the end of each adventure that Sony Singapore chose Flapper to be an influencer for the Action Cam.

These irreplaceable memories....
Thank you.

When Balto Pets Essentials first approached me to be the 'spokesdog' for Lactogold Probiotics, truth be told, mummy was very skeptical about it.  Mummy is not a big believer or fan of adding supplement(s) to our current diet unless really necessary.  She also believes that for any supplement and/or food that any of us (dogs and/or cats) represent, it has to be beneficial for all my other furry friends and not just endorsing it for the sake of some sponsorship or monetary reasons.

Here is mummy's rationale: "Probiotics?  I might as well just buy natural yoghurt."

But okay, mummy is probably too lazy to even get to the supermarket to buy us the yoghurt (we LOVE yoghurts!) unless for a special treat.

There you go.

Mummy cares a lot about us but she is the "do what is necessary" type over the "overindulgent" type.

So before mummy said 'yes' to starting us on Lactogold Probiotics, she spent hours talking to Auntie Elizabeth and Ann Marie to understand more about this product and some of its claims. Mummy also spoke to her trusted advisers to get their opinion.

She was 50-50.

50% - she likes Auntie Elizabeth and Ann Marie.  She knows that they stand for the product they sell and won't sell things that will not benefit animals.

50% - Do we really need Probiotics as a supplement?

For more in-depth understanding of Lactogold Probiotics, read this Q&A with Dr Chia, the man behind the formulation and manufacture of LactoGold Pet Probiotics in Singapore.

After much consideration, we decided to give this product a go and trialled it for a month before deciding whether to represent Lactogold Probiotics.

Based on the Lactogold fact sheet claims, as well as more popularly known for being effective for skin problems, mummy decided to trial it on each of us for different purpose:
  • Me, Flapper Choo - I am a healthy senior dog and have no known health problems at this point, other than bad hips since the day mummy adopted me.  During the trial period, I was on a short course of antibiotic for... I cannot remember what.  And probiotics is supposed to be immune-booster so that was pretty much it.   For me, it was more as a supplement to maintain my senior health than a specific cause/problem.
  • Frodo Choo - Chronic ear problems.   Primarily attributed by the fact that swimming and dog's ears are not best of friends.  Fortunately I am quite trouble-free and when I do get ear infection, it does not take long to clear.   Frodo, on the other hand....
Frodo's infamous never-ending ear guck.
  • Pebbles Wong - Skin.  Miss Wong's skin has gotten better over the years after mummy corrected her eating habit and insisting to daddy she has to learn to eat like a normal dog.  But now and again, she does still break out with a bit of rash.
Little Miss Spotty.
  • Fluffy Choo - Fur Loss.   For the first time ever, went bald at his thighs and had a bald patch on his tail.
Fatty Fluffy's bald patch at thigh
  • Frappe Choo - Perfectly healthy.  Just as a supplement.  Nothing to observe.

Results
  • Frodo Choo - Ears.  Reduced inflammation.  Improved, yes.  Total clearance, no.  Recurrence, yes but that is expected unless mummy stops bringing us to swim.  Inflammation, well controlled.  No 'after' image to show.  Just imagine reduced number of of gucky cotton pads.
  • Pebbles Wong - Skin.  Most significant improvement noted.  Within two weeks, the red spots at her undercarriage cleared. Recurrence, yes.
One month later on Probtiocs... the red spots cleared.
Pebbles today. As her skin improved, mummy decided to keep her glory schnauzer coat.  But she is still permanently smelly girl from Frodo's slobber.

  • Fluffy Choo - Fur.  Fluffy's fur has grown back very nicely and he is all... fluffy again.  Recurrence, no.
Fluffy's fur growing back after about 2 months.
Fluffy's leg fur has grown back completely and so far so good!
His tail fur has also grown back completely.  Fluffy is living up to his name.

It has been 8 months since we started on the Lactogold Probiotics.  Mummy does not religiously feed us the probiotics everyday.  She gets lazy some times and will conveniently leave it out.  The probiotics come in powder form and must be kept refrigerated so she gets lazy.  However, thanks to mummy's stringent ways when it comes to our eating habits, we (including the cats) do not have problem eating it with our food.

For believers in natural supplements for your pets, I guess it is worthy to note that its effects/benefits cannot be measured short-term.  Certain measurable benefits can be seen quite quickly (i.e. Pebbles' skin) but it tends to be slower in treatment/effect.  It is akin to traditional chinese medicine approach.  The effects and benefits are seen at a slow progressive rate rather than NOW.

I cannot comment on how much it is helping our immune system as we have no measure for that.  But so far, I think we are doing pretty good on it.

There is this other product called the K-Gel.

K is for Kaolin.  It is a form of clay found in nature.  It is one of the oldest form of anti-diarrhoea medicine that can be safely used in large doses.

When Auntie Elizabeth gave us the K-Gel, mummy rejected it as we rarely get diarrhoea.  But Auntie Elizabeth insisted we keep it for "just in case".

"Just in case" came in very handy when I ended up with a bout of diarrhoea after a wild swim at the sea.

"Just in case" was very effective.  My diarrhoea cleared within a day.

Did you know... there are  Lactogold Probiotics treats available too?
(from left: Probiotic Powder, Treats and K-Gel)

Probiotics are known to be beneficial even for humans.  It is something that can be consumed safely so for the benefits it offers, there is really no harm adding it to your pet's diet.

The biggest benefit of getting Lactogold?

"The main and most obvious difference is that LactoGold probiotics is formulated and manufactured in Singapore. That means that consumers in Singapore are getting the freshest possible dose of probiotics. Extensive air or sea travel can adversely affect the live cultures of probiotics, meaning that many overseas imports arrive with a much lower live bacteria count than advertised."

Hello everyone!

I am Flapper's mummy aka his ghostwriter. We are now halfway through his wonderful campaign with Sony Action Cam’s 'Prove Yourself: Take your adventures to new heights' campaign, and it is time for some tips and tricks on this awesome 4K Action Cam, the FDR-X1000VR.

Before I begin, I would just like to say that I am so grateful and blessed to have been given this opportunity to run this campaign with and for Flapper. I lost count of the years I've yearned for a POV camera to use on Flapper. I have always wanted to pick on his rocket scientist brains to see what he sees and most importantly, to record his moments.

And so far, I am absolutely loving the Action Cam, and I am saying that not because they have kindly sponsored Flapper with his own snazzy little camera but I REALLY TRULY LOVE the camera.

  • I love that it is user-friendly (easy-to-use).
  • I love that the camera does not disappoint - love the quality and clarity of the videos.
  • I love that it comes with this awesome wrist thing called the Live Remote Viewer.
  • I love that I am FINALLY able to record all our awesome activities and keep it for memory.
  • I love that I am FINALLY able to get a glimpse what Flapper sees.
  • I love that now I am FINALLY able to record some of his old activities that I used to WISH all the time that I could.

This is almost the best 9th birthday present Flapper could receive.

With all that said, let me commence my top 8 tricks for using the Sony 4K Action Cam and some of its accessories.

1.  *important* Bookmark these HELP pages -
  • Sony Help Guide -  As mentioned before, for a non-professional who has never used a POV camera, this is a simple help guide that will help you through many of your initial "What the hell are these settings? Grrrrr...." moments.
  • Setting up Highlight Movie Maker - the HMM is useful for the following footages: Viewing the footages you have taken (no sound!); Creating very quick and short videos (just for fun) if you cannot wait to get on your desktop to slllooowwwwlllllyyyy edit the multitude of footages.
    • Viewing the footages you have taken (no sound!);
    • Creating very quick and short videos (just for fun) if you cannot wait to get on your desktop to slllooowwwwlllllyyyy edit the multitude of footages.
    • However, I seldom use it for Flapper’s POV videos as the footages can be too shaky for HMM to pick up.
I love the Sony Help Guide.  The webpage is easy to navigate, clean and simple.

After the initial 'eh... what are these settings?" moments, the camera is actually really easy to use and foolproof.

2. Turning on the camera

I had many "What the *beep*!  Why is it recording on its own?" moments.

P.S.
THAT red button can be very useful if you want to do immediate "I need to capture that moment NOW" recording... especially those little moments with the pets.

3. Using the Live View Remote (LVR)

Okay okay... if you haven't read my ghostwriting raves about the Live View Remote, I will say it again.

I.LOVE.THE.LIVE.VIEW.REMOTE.

I am still absolutely bummed that my LVR ended up at the bottom of the sea. Maybe some fisherman may have found it. Or maybe a fish may be wearing it. But this means after this campaign, I will be LVR-less after returning the second camera. :(

To add salt to my own wound, let me weep through on why I love the LVR:
  • It is actually very easy to use.
  • It is waterproof and hardy.
  • The battery life is amazing!  To date (just over two months), I have probably charged the LVR.... twice or thrice maybe.
  • It controls up to 5 cameras simultaneously.
  • The view-switch between cameras is fast.
  • The record button on the LVR allows the user to run the recording of different cameras at the same time (very useful for different POVS so each file recording on each camera syncs together).
  • It is the perfect POV camera companion for a control freak - you can actually frame and see what you are recording.

R.I.P. my good friend.

I hope you are having fun with the fish in the sea

So now, tips on using the LVR:

  • The LVR is really easy to use but for a camera-dinosaur, I did have my 'duh' moments trying to figure out what each image on the screen represented. So do spend a bit of time playing around with the LVR to figure out what each picture means.
Confession: I am still not all that familiar with all the settings on the LVR
The LRV allows live view of the image you are recording.
Here is Flapper lazing in his favourite tiny bed whilst keeping me company.

  • Set-up your LVR before your first activity especially if you are using more than one camera. For first time users, it may take a few tries.
    • Bookmark these LVR set-up pages:
      • Single camera set-up
      • Multi cameras set-up
      • LVR Help Guide
    • Make sure you have your Wi-Fi password with you.
      • In case you lose/lost that Wi-Fi paper/sticker that came with the camera....
        • Locating the SSID and Password for Action Cam
  • To do quick views/playback (no sound), connect to your mobile device(s).
  • Working with multiple cameras:
    • After connecting the cameras to the LVR, you are still able to connect and use the cameras individually at any point of time without changing the Wi-Fi setting on the camera and LRV.
    • To record different POV at the same time (with more than one camera), press the record button on the LVR and it will activate recording on ALL cameras at the same time.
    • To record just using a single camera, press the record button on that particular camera.
Now... for the most important tip of all - WEAR THE LVR especially when you are out at sea. *guffaw*

4.  Don't be afraid to 'just press those buttons'

The camera, as much as it looks 'plastic-ky' and somewhat like a kid's toy, it is actually quite hardy. Unless you have tech-death-finger(s), the camera won't crash on you.

Be bold.

Just play around with the left, right button to explore the functions and settings (record button to select). Then play around recording silly things to see where each function can take you.

The test shots are really fun to do! :o)

Refer to the Sony Help Guide when you have no clue or forgot what those functions actually mean.

5.  Find your personal 'Sweet Spot' setting

Unlike DSLRs, there isn't that 'automatic' setting that you can just half-click brainlessly for the camera to auto-focus so that the images turn out looking decent.

So, if you are a lazy user like me, it really helps to find sweet spot default setting that works for you = almost chop-guarantee the end video footages will not fail you regardless whether you are taking fast or slow moving videos, indoors or outdoors etc. etc.

This also means you just turn on the camera and press record.

Easy peasy!

My personal favourite setting:
  • This is my one-for-all foolproof setting including indoors, underwater, running, walking etc.;
  • For a regular home/personal user, the quality and clarity of the videos work well enough;
  • I can use Highlight Movie Maker (HMM) to create quick videos just to see if I made a disastrous videos -
    • Not all settings are compatible with HMM.
  • Video file sizes are relatively manageable for the desktop/laptop/computer.  It is approximate... 1 minute = 1 GB.  "Only".  Ha!
    • Hint: External hard disk drive is very very important.
    • Hint: Keep each recording to around 4 minutes for easy transfer to the external hard disk drive.
  • Video file sizes will allow MORE recording time on the camera (the higher the settings, the bigger the files).
My all-purpose 'can-do-no-wrong' setting

Settings Explained:

Screen Shot from Sony's Help Guide

Other 'default' settings not displayed:
  • Wind Reduction: ON
  • Mount (very very important): BODY
    • If 'mount' mode is not set, you cannot use that Highlight Movie Maker.
    • I stick to default 'Body' mount and never bothered to use 'Others'.
  • Auto-White Balance (AWB): Auto
    • For non-professional camera users like myself, AUTO is a good mode to be on.
  • Scene: NORMAL
    • I use it for underwater too even though there is 'water' scene-mode.

6.  ALWAYS use the default waterproof case
when attaching the camera on your dog

Never trust the dog.
Rather damage the waterproof case than the Action Cam 4K.
Cheaper to replace.

The gorgeous artwork done by a Mr Flapper, missing the lens by 1 mm.

Flapper's brutalized underwater case.
It was once upon a time a clear casing.
It is now somewhat... matted (scratched).
Sigh.  Oh Flapper!
Note:
Flapper is really rough and brutal with the camera when he gloriously RUBS himself on any surface including concrete ground.

I have to give a big thumbs-up that the casing and camera have not died on me or gone into pieces.

7.  Taking a dog's POV (point-of-view)

This is one topic I am going to spend quite a bit of time on just because it is really different working with dogs.

It is really NOT easy capturing a dog's POV due to their movements and the accessories available to capture a dog's POV.

So let's start from the very beginning with the Sony dog harness (explained):

(photo credit: Furry Photos Pet Photography)

BY THEORY, I would daringly say that the design team did put some careful thought process has been given to this harness design - trying to make it multi-functional at an affordable price for consumers - thus all that velcro.

Prove points:
  • The usage of velcro straps to make the harness a one-size-fit-all harness (it comes with a strap extension too);
  • The additional mount extension to capture 'over the head' shots;
  • That rubber 'saddle' to make the harness lightweight and easily conforms to the dog's body.

Credit to the design thought process but reality-bites (Ouch!  Sorry Sony!) -
  • While the velcro is useful, it is not ideal. The straps are too thin, and if one has a dog like 'back-rub' Flapper.... the lifespan of the velcro will be short-lived. You may also end up having to do treasure hunt for the Action Cam amongst bushes. Ha!
  • It lacks a centre anchor point. With only 2 thin straps in place, the harness will swing from side to side especially with the bigger dogs. As you can see from the image above, the camera was tilting to the left side.
  • That rubber 'saddle' - It's actually quite a cool idea because it is light weight (comfortable for the dog) and it does conform to the dog's body shape. However, once the extension mount and the camera with the underwater case goes on, it does not hold the weight well.
  • The mount extension: Be mindful that it does not perfectly hold the camera in place as the camera will tilt upwards as the dog runs.

You can see in this image that the camera has gone "Hello Sky!"
by the time Flapper came back with the ball.

After dissecting the harness for your understanding on its needed design modification on the dog harness, here are some tricks to help you capture decent POVs of your dogs/pets:
  • For high-speed running shots, ditch the extension mount.  Just attach the camera directly to the harness (more stability instead of the mount swinging from side to side).  Harness positioning is crucial too.

The harness at this position is NOT ideal when the dog runs at high-speed.

Ditch the mount extension and move the harness further back.
Will be great if there was that crucial third strap anchor in the middle.

My favourite video thus far of Flapper in action and his POV as he went on this bush-dive-hunt.

After spending much time figuring out how to get relatively stable
Flapper's POV videos, this is my favourite action video to date!

  • For 'still'/minimum movement POVs (the dog is just standing or lying - NO sitting) - the extension mount is very useful to get over-the-head shots.
  • The back-mount will only capture sky shots when the dog is sitting or jumping and ground shots when the dog is facing downwards.
In this jumping shot, I could not capture Flapper's
POV as he aimed and jumped to catch the ball.

In this shot where Flapper was scooping the ball up,
I got a whole lot of blurred movements and floor.

In this sitting shot, you can see where the camera
is pointing.  So a back-mount does not work when
the dog is sitting down.

  • And since Sony has not created a head/collar/front mount accessory for the pets.... here's a little idea on how you can create one.
My self-created collar mount.

You can adjust the camera distance from the neck to avoid the ear blocking
the camera but the greater the distance, the less stable the camera.
This make-shift mount is not perfect.  Cannot be used for high-speed runs
either but good enough for 'still' POVs i.e. our video of Frodo's car ride.

Frodo on car-ride video with the self-made collar mount

And when you finally managed to capture some good dog POVS, sit back and have a good laugh... at Frodo.

Images taken from Flapper's POV with the Action Cam (on Lapse Mode)

Perfect shot of the ball flying right pass Frodo.
Legend-wait for it-dary.

The cruel humans having a good laugh over Frodo's inability to catch the ball.

Flapper found his ball!

When the photographer gets caught on camera.

Last important tip:

Have an idea of what you are doing with the dog/pet before strapping the cameras on.  This will help you determine what works best and how.

Stay tuned to watch our upcoming new videos of our adventures which will feature more of Flapper's POV!

8.  Going Underwater

This was... one of the biggest excitement for owning a Sony Action Cam - to take it underwater with the boys!  The Action Cam (comes with underwater casing) motivated me to teach Flapper how to go underwater... just for the fun of it.

The camera did not disappoint.  We had oodles of fun attempting underwater shots and Flapper had oodles of fun trying to get the toy.

P.S.  The 'edited-out' videos gave me a very good insight to how Flapper thinks.  He would look at the toy above water to determine the position, then plunge his head in while using his paw to feel for the object position.  Okay Flapper.  Mummy get it.  You're quite a genius.

So for underwater shots, I only have one big fat tip:
GET THE FLAT DIVE DOOR LENS.

The concave lens comes default with the waterproof.
Flat Dive Door Lens needs to be purchased separately.

Flapper underwater image using the Concave Lens.
Image is blur and colour somewhat muted.

This image was taken using the Flat Lens.

My favourite UNDERWATER video using the Flat Lens!

I was so happy when I finally managed to capture these
underwater moments. Epic!

For Fish/Koi/Goldfish Hobbyist.....
A particular Mr Choo of the family is a Koi enthusiast. I could not resist testing the Action Cam in his four feet deep fish pond to see his giant koi and the chubby goldfish.

Notes:
  • Live View Remote loses connection once the camera goes underwater.
  • Just note that the flat-lens does not fog up in a glamorous way.  So when that happens, don't panic.  It will de-fog eventually.  I confess.  I panicked.
  • The original waterproof case only goes up to 10 metres/33 feet.  With the Flat Dive Door lens, it can apparently increase the depth to 60 metres/197 feet.  I have not taken it to such depth so I cannot verify this.

And that's my top 8 tips and tricks for the Action Cam 4K.

I will just end off by saying again that the Action Cam is a fabulous POV camera to own.  It has been fabulous and frustrating at the same time pushing myself to the limits trying to create different adventures/activities with Flapper.  The videos may not show the many setbacks we've had just trying to get one adventure into our books but it is nevertheless a blessing to be able to create what we had, have and will be doing and most importantly, to be able to capture every little moment with the Action Cam.

You see, we are pushed to create 'high-impact' adventures with the camera but personally, I think the beauty of POV cameras come from capturing life moments with Flapper.   Recording significant moments and activities in a dog's life is akin to parental moments of recording the child's first walk, first word, first giggle, first day at school....

And life moments captured on a POV camera is more powerful than Flapper running through an agility course.

So what's my biggest tip of all for the Sony Action Cam?

It captures irreplaceable life moments beautifully.

Flapper's visit to My First Skool.
Moments like this.... I give thanks for owning the Sony Action Cam.
