Life has a funny way of telling its own tales tails.

When I started on my new Sony XPERIAnce journey, I took it on with much trepidation (my much-confessed fear of moving away from iOS) and anticipation of what's to come. I always say, God has an immaculate sense of humour and things will happen as it happens.

Let's just call it Life XPERIAnce.

And that is perhaps the exhilarating part of stepping into the unknown zone and embracing the life moments that occur. It has been, well, an interesting two months. Like many others, my mobile phone has become the indispensable and quintessential tool for communication and perhaps even more importantly, capturing life moments with the advanced camera technology infused with any given mobile phones these days.

I unapologetically declared in my Xperia Journey Begins post that the camera is of utmost importance and my end-user XPERIAnce. After several Android vs iOS debates, it was a unanimous agreement that the preferred interface is based on individual requirement, character, preference and most importantly, end-user experience.

After many years of defending the greatness of the iPhone camera, it is clear from Part 1 of My Top 10 XZs XPERIAnce post that the Sony Xperia XZs camera has won me over. The overall end-user XPERIAnce has been a pleasant surprise too for the self-proclaimed Android idiot.

So hear hear.
Here is Part 2 of My Top 10 XZs XPERIANce.

No. 6 - Of Xperia Companion and Google-Everything

One of my biggest fear switching from iOS to Android was the compatibility to my other life-dependant Apple devices called the Macbook Pro and iMac.

I was informed prior to my big switch from iPhone to Sony Xperia that the apps may not be supported. I was okay about the 'no apps' support part as it has long been established that my core use of the phone did not involve the use of many apps. I was content as long as on first use, it was trouble free transfer of contacts and whatever else necessary to get the phone going.

Setting Up A New Sony Xperia

One discovered this cool app called Xperia Transfer Mobile which is pre-installed in the phone that made transitioning from iPhone (or other Android or Windows phone) to Sony Xperia pretty seamless with step-by-step instruction on the 'How-To'.

It was a pleasant surprise when I was setting up my new Xperia that changing interface/phone has become so easy. If my old man memory did not serve me wrongly, I think this app does pop up on start-up of my new Xperia XZs phone.

So thumbs up to the Sony Mobile team for making this lazy Android-idiot's life so easy.

It is Google-Everything....

I wonder why it is still called 'Android'. Doesn't an Android phone seems more like a Google phone? Everything is is linked to Google - sign-in with Google account, auto back-up with google account, auto-photo transfer to google photos, email set-up with Gmail.... it is literally Google-Everything!

After my initial set-up of my Xperia XZs phone, I did not give much thoughts to backing up my phone and file transfers. By then, it was clear that if all else fails, the phone had already "Google-everything" so I did not have much to worry about.

On this note, the Android mountain-tortoise have to say that this is definitely one advantage of Android over iPhone - the ease of backing up the phone via Google. I have to admit I disabled my iCloud transfers because it made the computers very laggy while it was transferring AND! With the number of photos I had in the phone, it did not take very long before iCloud issued me a warning that I was out of space. Meh!

And no, I wasn't diligent enough to manually upload photos from my iPhone to Google Photos or Google Drive to back it up.

So I have to admit I was secretly enjoying this brainless advantage of 'Google-everything'. The best part of all, with Blogger and YouTube under the Google umbrella, I can easily upload images and videos without transferring the files from my phone... everywhere.

This was a privilege I never knew of when I was an iPhone user.

The ease of adding images taken with my Xperia XZs phone to my blog.
Because the images and videos are auto backed-up to Google Photos, I can also easily upload a footage taken with my Xperia XZs to YouTube.

... And Along Comes Xperia Companion

Despite the useful convenience of Google-Everything, there are times when I still need to work with the images and/or videos from my computer.

And that was when I discovered Xperia Companion.

Many moons ago when I first tried an Android phone which left me with a bitter after-taste, I had to download Android File Transfer on my Mac. I thought perhaps it was the same deal with my Xperia. So I mindlessly plugged my XZs to my Macbook and the phone screen popped up the several options - charge this device, supply power, transfer files or use device as MIDI.

I selected 'Transfer Files' and bing! Xperia Companion popped up on computer! Sony Xperia has an inbuilt software which allows user to install on their Mac for easy back-up and transfer of files.

The in-built Sony Xperia Companion (very aptly-named) which allows users to install the software on their desktop device.

I was impressed.
Very very impressed.

The Sony XPERIAnce is getting better with time.

AND! The minute I discovered Xperia Companion, I shamelessly stretched my paw out to take Uncle Nic's Xperia XZs. NOW I can easily "steal" the photos and videos he took of Frodo and me during our WETnesday #LABtest.

Disclaimer:
Like all phones, the Xperia needs to be unlocked before file transfer. So no, I could not just plug-in Uncle Nic's phone and transfer the files. He had to unlock the phone first.

No. 7 - Liang-Teh For You, Sony Xperia?

As mentioned in my Xperia Journey Begins post, the rapid overheating issue of Sony mobile devices - apparently - is old news. I have spoken to a few Sony users - past and present - and one of the biggest gripe that everyone has is the overheating issue.

One user told me. She used to have a Sony phone (I cannot remember the model) when she was in Australia. She literally had to bring out the fans in her room to cool the phone down as it got "sooooo hot". I burst out laughing visualising this poor girl in her dorm room armed with fans to cool down her phone.

I was also pre-warned of the apparent overheating issue on the day I received my brand new Xperia XZs. And as previously mentioned, the worst XPERIAnce was the phone overheating within 5 minutes of use on a very hot afternoon. Using the camera app does bring the phone temperature up quite rapidly and even on a not-so-hot day outdoors, I could feel the phone temperature rising while I was #LABtesting the camera.

Worst case scenario - The phone will warn you that it is overheating and will shut down the app. OR one is unable to even use the app if the phone is already overheated caused by leaving it out in the sun.

This ongoing overheating issue with Sony Xperia phones does affect an end-user's experience even if it has undeniably amazing camera and features. Google "Sony Xperia Phone Overheating" and the returns are plenty. And of course, if your usage on certain apps (in my case, the camera) is heavy and prolonged, overheating will certainly occur more often than not.

There is no way around this overheating issue other than some conscious human effort to manage the problem. I have been getting better at managing it and apart from that one-time severe overheating, the phone has been behaving.

TIPS: How To Minimize Overheating problem Outdoors:
  1. Refrain from leaving the phone out even in what seems to be shady area. Our lovely tropical weather "bakes" the phone. So overheating can occur even before use.
  2. When 'hiding' the phone in the bag, ensure that the phone is not getting direct contact with the sun especially if the bag is left open (speaking from personal experience). In other words, as much as possible, try to keep the phone away or minimize contact from/with direct sun or heat.
  3. When driving, one may need to consider position the phone holder right in front of the air conditioning vent and avoid direct sunlight hitting the phone especially on a very hot day - which is almost everyday in Singapore.
  4. Minimize apps running in the background. I have gotten really good in closing all apps before going on my trigger-happy spree.
  5. If the phone overheats within 5 minutes of use, it indicates the weather is way too hot so might be a better idea for humans and pets to go back indoors to hibernate.
  6. When all else fails, just splash the phone down with water since it is water resistant anyway.
Truth be told, in 1 1/2 months of using the Xperia XZs, I have only experienced severe overheating issue once (see Tip #7). So it has not been a nagging problem that occurs with every to every other use. I would conclude that this heaty problem, on most occasions, can be managed.

Liang teh, anyone?

UPDATE 06-July-2017

Further to my above write-up about this overheating issue, I am happy to release this official statement from Sony Mobile Singapore:

How can you be sure the phone will not get too hot when recording in Super slow motion?
Thanks to the world’s first memory stacked sensor, Super slow motion recording does not create additional heat - it consumes less power than regular video recording, such as in Full HD or 4K.

We have also focused on efficient heat management throughout the device, including the integration of a graphite sheet which lies in-between the LCD display and the battery, to enable redistribution of heat away from the camera module. In addition, the Snapdragon 820 processor ensures the device performs efficiently, which also reduces the formation of heat.

Another fantastic test conducted by 'Phone Battles' on YouTube. It is called "4K HEAT TEST! Sony Xperia XZ Premium vs XZs vs XZ vs Z5P vs Z5 vs M5 vs Z3+ vs Z3v".

Point to note though, the heat test was conducted indoors.

So there you go! I think this video can safely dispel fears about the Sony Xperia XZs and Premium overheating issues. After watching this video, it has certainly upped my itch to test the Sony Xperia Premium. 😩

Oh Sony Mobile Singapore!
How you've spoilt me with the XZs. 😩😩😩

No. 8 - Hello. It's Me.

We live in a world dominated by selfie, wefie, theyfie, usfie, themfie, mefie... whatever-fie.

One of the first things I learnt from a beeming Miss J from Sony Mobile Singapore as she demonstrated the Xperia XZs selfie-mode to me - the front camera's resolution is 13MP (4:3). At that point, I was using the iPhone 6s (5MP front camera) which, let's face it, iPhone has never been known for its selfie mode. Anywoof, I do not induge much in selfies so it never really bothered me.

HOWEVER, when Miss J further demonstrated the cool function of taking selfies 'handsfree' using gesture recognition (see video below)... Oh my bark! I flashed my signature PR smile for the camera.
Sony Xperia XZs boasts of 13 megapixels front camera and has gesture recognition (or smiles) too! Sorry guys, the algorithm does not include dog's paw or smile. Tried and tested.

And because of how fab and fun the Sony Xperia XZs, I decided to put together this short 30 seconds 'How-To' video.... enjoy!

Taking Selfies with Sony Xperia XZs

No. 9 - Of Battery Life, Dual SIM Card, External MicroSD Storage and The Sony XPERIAnce

This section should be No. 10 but I insisted I had to save the best for last. So please excuse me if this is a little incoherent in its order.

Sooo.... one of the first questions I was asked when I first leaked out the news that I would be testing out the Sony Xperia XZs, "Does the phone have dual sim card and external storage?"

Again, these are not the 'extras' I look for in a mobile phone and unless mummy decides to get me a 'Flapper line', I do not have much use for dual SIM card. We, the furry kind of 4 legs, are pretty much grounded and as much as I dream of jet-setting, I don't think it will ever happen in this lifetime.

However, I do appreciate having the option of external storage for a phone. You see, after many moons using the iPhone, I forgot external storage for mobile phones is even remotely possible. And with many thanks to my two years stint with Sony Action Cam, I - Flapper Choo - actually do have a spare MicroSD card available! Woof!

As you can see from the Xperia Companion image above, my internal storage is swiftly clocking up its mileage from all our #LAB-test videos and photos. So indeed, being able to have extra storage is always good.

So.
Sony Xperia XZs.

Dual SIM CARD - check!
External MicroSD storage - check!

Then comes that thing about battery life.

So far, I have no complains about the battery life. I'm content. On most days, I only need to charge before I go to bed with 40%-50% battery life remaining. With that said, I do have to point out I do not cook telephone porridge  (hog on the phone) nor do I spend a lot of time messaging.

Using the phone camera does sap up the phone battery rapidly. In my latest #LAB-test, I started out with just about 50% of battery life. After around 50 minutes of intermittent use of the camera, the phone signalled low battery - 15% of battery life remaining.

In general, like most phones, heavy usage of apps (i.e. games, videos etc.) does eat up the battery life quickly and can overheat the phone too - depending on environmental conditions at point of use.

The Overall Sony XPERIAnce

The Sony XPERIAnce comes from a point of creation and discovery, an exhilarating journey of testing out what the capability of the Xperia XZs camera.
I think it is clear that I am absolutely enjoying the Sony XPERIAnce. I am personally surprised that I will come to love the XZs as much as I do considering what a hardcore iPhone supporter/user I was. I started on this journey with an open mind on what the XZs has to offer even though I was adamant the camera surely could not win the iPhone.

From the initial set-up to daily usage to its awesome water resistant feature to its amazing camera, the Xperia XZs has surprised me on many levels. The Sony XPERIAnce as an end-user has been pleasant and #LAB-testing the camera has been and still is exhilarating. When Miss J first introduced the Xperia XZs to me and told me all about the fantastic camera, I was not convinced. At all.

Apart from being bias towards the iPhone's camera (then), personal experiences with Android phones left me short-changed. By far, the iPhone proved reliable and trustworthy in taking photos of dogs in action. It was my no-fail doggie phone camera.

Kudos to Miss J's confidence in the Xperia XZs camera and still decided to let me, Flapper Choo, test the phone out despite my early barks of skepticism. As much as I started out bias against the Android interface, I do take my job seriously and spent A LOT of time getting to know the phone especially the camera to give a fair and unbiased review.

After one and a half months of dabbling with the Xperia XZs, I have to raise my paws and doggishly admit, "I am loving my Sony (Xperia XZs) phone a lot. I am not struggling with it as much as I thought I would. And the phone camera is damn impressive. Better than my iPhone (6s). You HAVE TO check out the Super Slow Motion....."

No. 10 - It's All In That 0.18 Seconds

I had to save the best for last.

For one reason and one reason only why anyone and everyone should own the Xperia XZs (better still, the XZ Premium) is for this revolutionary, super awesome, MUST-HAVE what-I-call-the-Sony-RX-technology..... it is called Super Slow Motion.

So I admitted in my first article that I sold-out just for Super Slow Motion. You can read all my delirious yaps about Super Slow Motion here - The Xperia Journey Begins.

Please allow me to say it one more time.... I LOOOOVVVVVVEEEEE Super Slow Motion. It rocks!

Peace.

Super Slow Motion Explained

Geek Talk:
It shoots at 960fps.

Human/Doggie Understandable Talk:
0.18 seconds footage extends to 6 seconds from point of capture

Super Slow Motion = 32 times slower.

How 0.18 Seconds Really Looks Like

via GIPHY
via GIPHY

No shit. Those were 0.18 seconds in my life and that is about all the time you have to capture THAT sweet spot perfect moment for super slow motion.

How That 0.18 Seconds Looks Like In Super Super Slow Motion (6 Seconds)

via GIPHY
via GIPHY

Unlike the RX100M4/M5 cameras where one has 2-3 seconds of footage to work with, the Xperia XZs only allows 0.18 seconds.... which is not even 1 second. This is when the famous Nike's slogan becomes the motto - JUST DO IT!

And if you happen to have a brother like mine *cough Frodo Choo* who has no sense of direction and has a faulty brake system, one may suffer some bangs (not yet bruises) to capture some of these Super Slow Motion shots.

If you have not seen this Hazar-DOH! video in part 1 of this Sony Xperia XZs review, here's a reminder of the crash while #LAB-testing.

So yes, be brave and conquer Super Slow Motion!

How-To Capture in 'Super Slow Motion (One-Shot)'

Super Slow-Motion (One-Shot) = Just that 0.18 seconds footage that extends to 6 seconds - as per our GIF footage above.

Using One Shot is for adrenaline junkies who love the thrill and challenge of being able to capture THAT 0.18 seconds. And when you can capture THAT moment! Ohh-la-la! That sense of achievement is undeniably boast-worthy and spectacular.

Tip:
Be brave.
Buy insurance (just kidding).

The biggest problem with doing Super Slow Motion is the nerves. The tendency to press that red button too soon is common.

The best tip I can give is.... grit your teeth and press that button when your heart feels like it's going to fail you with all the action going on. That is when you will probably capture that sweet-spot 0.18 second moment.

There is no way to explain how Super Slow Motion works with works. Thanks to my good companion called Sony Action Cam, I am able to put together this 'How-To' video that will show you exactly when to press that red button.

How-To Capture in 'Super Slow Motion'

It is just called Super Slow Motion on the phone.

Super Slow Motion = Continuous video footage that takes allows one or more Super Slow Motion at desired timing(s) in one footage.

The above video tells the story of what Super Slow Motion is all about and how ridiculously fun it can be to create our own story.

I personally prefer using this mode over One-Shot. As it is a part of an entire footage, it is more forgiving even if one misses that sweet spot timing. It also gives the user a little bit more of mental preparation to capture THAT 0.18 seconds.

Then it takes approximate 1.9 seconds for the Super Slow Motion video to process (see video below). This means, ambitiously, taking two super slow mo shots of us (the dogs) in one take may be possible but three shots has proven quite impossible unless we are swimming or running in repetitive circles.

Anywoof, here's my detailed step-by-step How-To video that I've painstakingly put together which explains how Super Slow Motion works as well. Hope it helps!

And I say again.

For one reason and okay, two reasons only why Xperia XZs is a fabulous phone - THE CAMERA and SUPER SLOW MOTION technology.

This is my Sony XPERIAnce.

THE END.

Before I begin on my yaps, I would once again like to say a huge thank you to Miss J from Sony Mobile Singapore for choosing me to be the Xperia XZs influencer/product tester.  One and a half months has passed since I first started on my Sony Xperia journey and the phone exceeded expectations. I am truly loving the Xperia XZs experience and I am so glad I decided to put on my fake chicken suit and test the phone out.

I am a primitive boy and age dictates my resistance change. Changing from iOS to Android interface was very scary and daunting. I was worried about "what if I hate the phone????"

But the transition has been surprisingly easy and this is a big thing for an iPhone user to say... I have been won over by the Xperia XZs camera. I am enjoying the XPERIAnce a lot more than an ardent iPhone fan should.

I admit to missing my iPhone when I see someone else using it. I miss the hand feel of the phone most probably from my many years of being an iPhone user. I miss the stability and simplicity of an iOS interface especially the social media apps. I miss not needing to restart my phone once too often. I have been told by veteran Android users that it is common for Android phones to require restart once every so often which made me feel a little more sane that it is not 'user problem'.

But when I see the fabulous photos and wonderful super slow motion videos captured, the feelings go away. After all, for me, the camera is of utmost importance in a mobile phone.

And because the Sony Xperia XZs has so impressed me - especially the camera - that I decided to write about my Top 10 XPERIAnce even though I am not required nor paid to do a review whatsoever. I am writing this just out of pure love for the phone. In addition, with the Sony Xperia Premium freshly launched, I hope my article and little 'tips' here will be of help especially the Predictive Capture and Super Slow Motion function.

This Top 10 list is not in order of importance or preference of any of its function or feature. It is more 'off the head', let it flow type list.

No. 1 - It Is Water Resistant

I have to confess. I have used but not fully-abused the boast-worthy water resistant feature of the phone. I have not done the ridiculous by sinking the phone in the swimming pool but I have been splashing it with water to remove the fog on the lens and mummy claims it cools down the phone as well. And erm, I do pretty much chuck it at the pool side with water splashing all over it as I ditch it to indulge in my favourite past time called swimming.

Uncle Nic could not resist taking a photo of my phone lying by the pool side as evidence of the awesome Water Resistant feature. Yep! The phone is still alive!

And because the phone is water resistant, both Uncle Nic and mummy bring their phones into the swimming pool to capture Frodo and my glorious moments of jumping into the pool.

Mister Universe jumping into the water with his derp face. Captured with the Sony Xperia XZs while mummy is in the pool. Super fun!

WARNING:
Sense and sensibility... DO NOT use the phone at the beach or with salt water! It will rust, erode and die. Here's a good article to read - Waterproofing Explained - How Apple, Samsung and Sony Keep The Liquid Out.

No. 2 - The Touch-Screen Is Responsive With Wet Fingers, Wet Screen.

Did I mention Uncle Nic got his very own Sony Xperia XZs phone too?

This was a surprise discovery Uncle Nic and mummy made while testing out their Sony Xperia XZs. With the humans joining us in the swimming pool, they have to handle the phone with wet hands, if not wet screen. My phone is set to go to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity so the fact that the touch screen is responsive with wet fingers is especially useful for our swimming activities.

There's Uncle Nic with his black Xperia XZs in the pool with us. Water resistant, check! Touch-Screen responsiveness to wet fingers/wet screen, double-check!
Because it is too troublesome to constantly unlock the phone, I tend to favour using the camera quick launch instead. HOWEVER, the camera does exit back to the lock screen after 30 seconds which can be a bit teeth-gritting.

And because the touch-screen is that sensitive, [me thinks] it responds to the water droplets on the screen so it keeps auto-switching to 'selfie' mode. This seems to occur more frequently when using the camera from quick launch. It can prove to be annoying especially when Frodo and I are raring to plunge into the water and then we hear mummy shouting, "Wait! I am not ready! The camera went to selfie mode... AGAIN!"

The 'auto-selfie' issue is no life-and-death matter so we can let it slip. The fact that the Xperia XZs is water resistant and touch-screen responsive with wet crinkly fingers, that itself is impressive. It increases the possibilities of the activities we can carry out with the phone which includes playing in the rain!

Because of its water-resistant and touch-screen sensitive feature, the humans can get close-up shots of Frodo and me jumping in with huge splashes of water! Woohoo!
Can I complain?
No, not really.

Can I rejoice and be merry?
Certainly can!

No. 3 - Cracking The Predictive Capture Puzzle....

Screenshot taken from Sony Mobile Global  website. I was so excited when I saw this photo and the fun I was going to have with Predictive Capture. Unfortunately, it was a let-down and failed to predict on most occasions.
As mentioned in my first post on the Xperia XZs, I did not have much success with Predictive Capture. After over a month of many unsuccessful attempts to crack the predictive puzzle, I gave up and failed the un-Predictive Capture downright in this very post. It did not help either that most of these so-called tech reviews were pretty useless.

HOWEVER.

I am not sure if the Tech-God decided to smile on Sony or something, but on 14th June 2017, the Predictive Capture started working like a dream and started predicting Frodo and I in action pretty consistently! *gasp*

My favourite moment capture from our #LAB-test on 14th June 2017. Predictive Capture finally started working and we managed to predictively capture many moments.
On previous [rare] occasions when Predictive Capture worked, it seemed to predict (rarely) when both Frodo and I were in the shot. Lo and behold! It managed to Predictive Capture solo-me jumping into the swimming pool! Woohoo! FINALLY! IT WORKS!
Tips: How Oh How Did I Do It?
  1. Cleared the camera cache - Settings > Apps > Camera > Storage > Clear Cache
  2. Changed the camera resolution from default 17MP (16:9) to 19MP (4:3)
I was honestly not sure which of the above two actually triggered Predictive Capture to work but I am placing my bet more on No. 2 - Shooting at 19MP. However, I won't be surprised either if the camera has cached some weird recognition or something by default. So yeah, I would say that it is worth clearing the cache after each session or intermittently if required.

Anywoof, just to test and verify my findings as well as to see if Predictive Capture still works well in a different setting, I decided to do another #LAB-test the very next day - on land. I diligently cleared the cache and started testing with 19MP resolution. I wanted to ensure that Predictive Capture was working consistently and reliably.

#LAB-Testing Predictive Capture again in 19MP resolution and on land this time. It is super fun to see what the camera predicts when it works!
And here's derp-Frodo's predicted shots of him failing to catch the ball.

Predictive Capture at 19MP (4:3) resolution. PASS!

After a few successful run with Predictive Capture at 19MP, I cleared the cache and switched to 17MP (16:9) just to prove my theory about 19MP.  True enough, I could not get a single action shot predicted and happily switched back to 19MP.

Do not mistaken. It is not that Predictive Capture does not work at all on 17MP. It does (occasionally) BUT so far the tests indicate that it is more successful predicting small to moderate movements (i.e. dogs walking, baby kissing human) AND it seems to favour cats over dogs!

Our surprise success with Predictive Capture at 17MP. It somehow favoured the cats. It has never worked on us, the dogs, when we sit and pose.
The ONLY predicted shot in 17MP from our previous swim session. As you can see, there were minimal movements from Frodo and me which possibly helped the prediction in 17MP.

The Thing About Predictive Capture Is....

The shots are orchestrated.

Sony Xperia XZs does not have 'burst mode' function and because of how prissy Predictive Capture can be, our shots are pre-planned rather than simple "point-and-shoot". And bearing in mind that we, the dogs, do move and jump rapidly, the auto-tracking can fail to keep up with our speed. In addition, Predictive Capture works such that it is "able to select up to four shots taken a second before the shutter release is clicked".

After many many tests with us, mummy concurred A SECOND is like eternity when it comes to us - the dogs. In under a second, Frodo and I can - jump and catch a ball, jump into the swimming pool, run out of frame (both), swoop up a tennis ball up (me) etc etc. So theoretically, the odds of getting 4 predicted shots is not in our favour as, more often than not, the action is over before 1 second. Comparatively, we achieved more success with 4 predictive capture at the swimming pool than we did on land. Speculatively speaking, I suspect it is because we have more little movements and the jump into the swimming pool requires more exaggerated movements which allows the camera more time to track and "remember" that one second before the shutter release is clicked.

In other words, we get more success, on land, with 2-3 shots predictive capture than 4 shots. Of 2 and 3, we get more success with 2 shots than 3. I say 4 shots is a bonus but since I discovered that little trick of shooting with 19MP (4:3) instead of 17MP (16:9), I am so happy that I can bark out loud and say that I have finally figured out HOW TO work predictive capture! Hoorah!

Two is the magic number. But I am not complaining. I do think for what it's worth, the lonesome predicted shot is pretty awesome too.
Mummy tends to favour capturing at the point I catch the ball as she HOPES to catch the motion of me jumping up to catch the ball. So in this shot, she tested clicking as I was descending - which she also hoped will achieve full 4 shots but she is happy with what the capture managed to predict here.
4 predicted shots in its full glory and my faithful onlookers watching me catch the ball.
The adrenaline rush of getting 4 shots predicted is akin to jumping into the pool!
Conclusively, Predictive Capture is a cool, fun and smart function to have conceptually. The idea of the camera intelligently predicting up to 4 shots and allowing the user to select whether to keep all four shots or selecting the best shot(s) to keep is enticing and pretty darn smart. But the thing it can miss to capture in comparison to traditional burst-shots - those millisecond expression changes and desired movement sequences.

And because of how quickly us (the dogs) move, there is no guarantee Predictive Capture is going to work every single time. So at this point, as much as I got Predictive Capture going, I am not 100% convinced it will work effectively with impromptu action shots.

But for what it's worth, I do enjoy the adrenaline rush Predictive Capture brings when it works to see how many shots it actually predicted.

AND! I am just reeling with a sense of satisfaction right now just because I finally managed to figure it out after one and a half months.

No. 4 - Bring On Predictive Hybrid Autofocus!
Sony’s highly sensitive Exmor RS™ image sensor comes equipped with Phase Detection Autofocus for fast and accurate performance. Add to that Predictive Hybrid Autofocus technology, which automatically tracks your object as it moves. Your shots of those subjects that never stay still (think kids and pets) are delivered with that all-important detail and sharpness.
Now this is when the Sony Xperia XZs camera technology and capability really shines. As mentioned in my 'Xperia Journey Begins' post, the deal breaker for me is the Xperia XZs camera capability - whether it is as good, if not better than the iPhone, when it comes to taking photos of us (dogs).

I cannot lie.

I do love the Xperia XZs camera. A LOT.

The Xperia XZs camera has impressed me. A LOT.

From its Exmor RS™ mobile image sensor to triple image sensing technology to Laser AF (Autofocus Assistance) to an impressively quick shutter speed to a dedicated camera shutter button, the Xperia XZs camera has it all when it comes to taking photos of us - the dogs - in action. And to top it off, it has this Predictive Hybrid Autofocus technology that works like a dream.

The only thing about the Xperia XZs camera though, it does tend to overexpose the shot. Uncle Nic taught me how to underexpose to compensate but the annoying part is that it goes back to default colour and brightness setting after each shot. I gave up after a few tries. I would rather swim than fiddle with the exposure.

Apart from that overexposure problem, I don't think I need to say more. The photos below should tell its own story on why Xperia XZs with its Predictive Hybrid Autofocus has won my heart.

Note:
I am not a professional photographer. I am just a regular end-user who is too lazy to use filters or edit photos. I swear by 'Auto' so even though the camera does have 'Manual' function, I do not use it. Most importantly, I believe that the photos I present must be honest and true to what the phone camera captures. So yep, what you see is what you get.

#nofilter
#honestphotos

This is my personal pick in my archive of #LAB-test photos that I believe truly shows all the blahs of what the Xperia XZs camera is all about. From the rich intensity of colours to the intricate details of water spashes including the tail trail water pattern to Frodo's expression, I think this photo says it all.
The one click wonder of capturing me in action.
Predictive Hybrid Autofocus wins!
Predicted versus....
Not Predicted
Frontal action... no sweat!
My Ah Lian sister joining me in action
That problem with overexposure.....

Love love love how Predictive Hybrid Autofocus is able to track and capture Frodo and me in action. Can you see my paw in the water? Full marks for the details captured despite all the crazy action going on

Posing for our Sunset Shot
Chasing Sunset with Laser AF (Autofocus Assistance)... so reviews say the Xperia XZs is impressive in capturing images in low light conditions. We will definitely be testing more of it but I am mighty pleased with what we got on first try!
Uncle Nic also testing out his Xperia XZs.... this shot got feel!

No. 5 - That Hidden Gem Called 'Xperia Movie Creator'

Yet another confession time.

I saw this 'Movie Creator' sitting somewhere in the 'Apps'. I did not think much of it. I pretty much ignored it whenever I received notifications about some new movie or slideshow was created. In fact, I was a little annoyed as I felt some of these apps were just wasting the phone battery and mobile data.

Then came that fateful day called Uncle Nic's birthday. We played dress-up to conduct a food tasting session before a simple Happy Birthday with him. I cannot remember when but the phone notification popped up again and showed it had created a movie.

For the first time, I opened it up to have a look.

And that was the first time I truly appreciated the point and purpose of the Movie Creator app. I call it the hidden gem as it is tucked away quietly amongst the apps that it is so easy to ignore.  I have turned off the notifications and auto-create function after I went to explore the app a little more....

Yes. It is one of those smarty apps limited by presets. If you are looking to do snazzy customisations with the app, you will be disappointed. It does have its limitations and only a couple of presets to play with but if, like me, you just want to do a quick movie/slideshow snippet of the day gone by, this app is sufficient to work with.

Couple of things to note:

  • The theme colour is determined by the filter selected. It cannot be customised.
  • There are 10 filters to choose from, excluding the 'original'.
  • The length of movie/slideshow is determined by the music selected. There are 13 tunes for selection, custom music can added too. The painful part is... it does not indicate the length of each tune so you will need to 'Apply' the tune to the footage to find out the actual duration.
  • You can select as many photos and videos as you want but the Movie Creator will auto-select from your selection to create. You can custom add after the initial creation.
  • You can edit which portion of the video(s) you want to use - about one second of the footage.
  • I think (almost sure) Movie Creator does not recognise Super Slow Motion (One Shot) footages.

So yeah, I decided to do another video as I was testing out the app again for facts-check. This hidden gem of an app is useful and fun to create a quick and short memory-type video/slideshow but not for 'serious' editing or video making purpose.

In a nutshell, if like me, you had an awesome day and have taken a gazillion photos and videos. And just for the fun of it, you want to create a quick video of the day gone by to get that 'feel', this is really what Movie Creator is all about.

Next up in Part 2 of Top 10 XZs XPERIAnce, I will be featuring my 'How-To' Super Slow Motion so look out for it!

In the meantime, if you have any questions or comments about the phone, please do feel free to leave a comment here. I will try to answer to the best of my blonde furry ability.

I have no idea why I am doing a food review for Fluffy and Frappe. Apart from being a food extraordinaire at eating, I know not much about cat's food.

After all, I am only but a dog.

What do I know about cats other than I live with two?

Anywoof, as I have never really written about the cats, so please forgive this long-winded post as I do an introduction of their diet.

A Dry Matter

Fluffy and Frappe have pretty much been on Wellness Cat Food for all their eight years of lives. Don't fall over your chair but they are actual siblings, born on 7th July 2009 and they were adopted into the Choo household at the tender age of eight weeks.

Mama always says, "Dogs... cats... same. Dry kibbles and they must eat it up in five minutes. No exception. No free-feeding. No picky eating."

So erm yeah. The same rules apply for Fluffy and Frappe. They have eating habits like ours - Frodo, Pebbles and me. Mummy is strict with all our eating habits. The cats do eat slower than us, the dogs, but they do finish up all their kibbles in one serving which makes mummy one very happy woman.

Mummy carries her feeding philosophy across us all. She may not spoil us with frivolous material belongings and she does not treat us to wet food very often too. BUT she is willing to spend a little more on our staple food to ensure we get quality and well-balanced diet. As mentioned in my 'Pursuit of Wellness' post, the once-considered Mercedes-Benz price point Wellness Complete Health and Wellness Core Pet Food has now become Toyota price point.

And I am very happy to say that Fluffy and Frappe are *touchwood* doing very well, health-wise. Economical and reliable Toyota is good, no?

Mummy decided I should do a little chart to calculate how much it costs to feed kitties. I hear her laments about how one of me (or Frodo) can feed six cats. Meh! So let's see how much it costs to feed both Fluffy and Frappe on Wellness Dry Food for Cats.

Oh golly me! That's it? *gasp* Frodo and I eat approximately 2x24lbs bag of Wellness Core Original per month which means.... it is RRP of SGD332.00 a month! Ooooo.M.G.!
At this point, I do have to make one thing clear. Only Frodo and I are sponsored on Wellness Core with many thanks to Silversky Pets. Needless to say, all of us - the dogs and cats - are #1 fans of Wellness Pet Food.

Fluffy and Frappe, alike to Frodo and me, are happy to chomp down any flavour of Wellness dry cat food mummy purchases for them. She does not switch the flavours up very often. It's not like the cats have a wide variety of flavours to choose from as compared to us. They are down to either Chicken, Turkey or Salmon. *guffaw*

Apparently... and I quote, "Some cats do not eat meat from animals that typically are not their prey, which may rule out beef, lamb, venison, and the like."

Interesting.

Domestic cats evolved from desert dwelling ancestors. Last time I checked, the world’s deserts were not exactly teeming with fish. The African wildcat, the most likely ancestor of today’s house cats, eats primarily mice, rats, and rabbits with the occasional bird or reptile thrown in for good measure.
- Quoted from Dr Jennifer Coates on www.petmd.com

And you know how in the cartoons, cats are always portrayed to be some fish-eating fanatic?

Well, apparently not so much so. We have been misled. In recent months, mummy has a growing gripe against fish and seafood for cats just because she has had some pretty vile experiences with some other cats and her disdain kept growing each day. She thought perhaps she was the only nutcase who made such observations and suspected she could be bias in preference. Despite her fervent protest, she was given the rolled-eyes as she ranted.

Then she chanced upon this article by Dr Karen Becker who spoke and wrote about 'Feeding Fish to Dogs and Cats is NOT Advisable'. Mummy finally felt sane again that she was not dreaming up her scenarios. Phew for mummy! She calls Dr Karen Becker the 'uber holistic vet' so it is contradicting using her as a reference especially when I am reviewing commercial food. She does speak against it. *guffaw* She does, however, release interesting articles on holistic feeding which mummy does take mental notes but neh, she does not religiously follow.

After all, we, the dogs and cats, are still on commercial food and so far, no complains. They are ridiculous pee and poo machines which never fail to amuse us daily as mummy cleans their litter tray. At least one thing we know, they are not *touchwood again* having constipation or urinary tract issues. And for what it is worth, mummy says she will take up the responsibility should something not be okay. Period.

Some may be wondering why mummy made the Complete Health food as the staple diet rather than the Grain Free Core food? It's always interesting to see how different cats and dogs dietary requirement can be. Once again, it is again debatable whether cats do need to be Grain Free/Gluten Free diets.

Here are two links for your reading pleasure but of course, all you need to do is find Dr Google and there are a gazillion more articles  -
  • Why Grain Free Cat Food May Not Always Be the Best Choice by Dr Lorie Huston, DVM
  • Natural vs Grain Free Cat Food by Lyn Thomson, BVSc DipHom
So... does this mean that kitties don't ever get Grain Free diet? No. Mummy does still put it in the occasional mix. Most importantly is, read the labels and do your own fair share of research. As mentioned, mummy's choices for us are boiled back down to awareness... and moderation.

Yours Truly, Fluffy and Frappe

Shortly after Silversky Pets sent us, Frodo and me, the Wellness Core Chunky Chunks to do a taste test and review, they sent 8 cans of Wellness Core Signature Selects for Fluffy and Frappe to try.

Fluffy and Frappe's turn to be food supermodels with their 8 cans of Wellness Core Signature Selects.
Frodo and I stared at the cans of food. Then we stared at mummy. We knew that kitties would be lucky if they got to eat every single can of it. Mummy ain't exactly santa claus of wet food towards us. She keeps it for 'special occasions' and... need I say more?

Rumour has it, after Fluffy and Frappe did their product test and photo taking, mummy has given 4 cans to a very special kitty that mummy loves a lot. Good things must share, right?

For their taste test, mummy randomly selected the 'Chunky Chicken and Salmon'. Mummy was confident that they would not have a problem with the flavours. Any flavour would work. After all, this is the first time in their 8 years of life indulging in wet food! Surely they be happy regardless what flavour was selected.

As expected, It did not take Fluffy and Frappe very long to start appreciating the delectable taste of the Chunky Chicken and Salmon......

Needless to say, Frodo and I were giving longing looks to mummy as kitties indulged in their food. The smell was heavenly. The minute mummy opened the can, we were at full attention and kept hoping and praying from under the table that kitties would somehow... drop a piece of the chicken cube.

No chance.
At all.
Unfair.
Confession.

I *cough mummy* did not know Signature Selects comes in three forms - Chunky, Flaked and Shredded! When I started doing up my 'famous chart', I asked mummy if she knew of the variations. *smug smile*

"Oh man... does this mean we need to randomly test the other two type as well?", mummy groaned.

I could not be bothered to entertain on that. After all, I DO NOT get to eat or taste kitties food so you are on your own with this mummy.

Sooooo.... kitties recently received delivery of their Wellness Complete Health Salmon and Salmon Meal dry food so for the fun of making yet another Wellness video, mummy decided to mix things up a little by mixing the dry food and one of the Signature Selects flavour for the second taste test.

She selected... Shredded Chicken and Chicken Liver. Frodo and I went nuts when we caught whiff as mummy opened the can.

CHICKEN AND CHICKEN LIVER!
REALLY, MUM?
WE STILL DO NOT GET TO TRY IT??????

The mother said no.

A post shared by Flapper Choo (@flapperchoo) on May 29, 2017 at 2:24am PDT

Fluffy and Frappe LOVED it. Mummy gave them the balance half-can on a different day and boy did they wolf it down.

But Frodo and I still got none of it.
Grrrrr.....

Conclusively

It is clear both Fluffy and Frappe had no complains about the taste. It was noted, though, that they responded better to the shredded as compared to the chunky. The flaky... they might get to eat it on their upcoming birthday? I don't know. Consult Your Royal Motherness on that one.

So now, it is time to have a look at THAT chart.
Giving it thumbs up for the good variation in proteins which has *surprise surprise* beef in the mix.
The ingredients look legit. As per our doggie Wellness Core Chunky Centers, the food is made up of 85% moisture which is ideal for cats who does not like consuming water.  Fluffy and Frappe  is primarily on chicken-as-first-protein diet so even though the main protein in the chunky and shredded is still chicken, but I like the idea of being able to offer beef in their protein mix well.

For SGD4.20 per 5.3oz can, it can be considered as the staple diet for them is still the dry food. So for that occasional treat and beef as an additional protein, it is highly-considerable as the dry food does not offer many choices of protein.

So... just for mathematics sake, based on a 4.5kg cat and for easy calculation....

Wet (per day) = 1/2 can = $2.10 per cat
Dry (per day) = 50g (1/2 cup) - 12.5g (1/8 cup) = 37.5g = approx. $0.25 per cat

Per day feeding per cat = $2.10 + $0.25 = $2.35
Per month feeding for 2 cats = ($2.35 x 2) x 30 = $141.00 (per cat @ $70.50 per month)

That, my friends, is still cheaper than feeding one of me on dry food only.

I doubt mummy will put them daily on dry+wet food mix but I do know that she is considering on 'now and again'.

Where To Buy

It is available at most pet shops and seems like a trend with Wellness that each time they launch a new product, there's an offer. For the Signature Selects, the current promotion is BUY 3 GET 1 FREE.

But of course, Kohepets online store would carry the Wellness range of food so you can check out buy direct from them.

Okay kitty friends, enjoy your Signature Selects!
